Each month, we highlight one of the new additions to the LACE Evidence Hub, which brings together evidence about learning analytics. On 15th April 2015 LACE project members organised the Spring Briefing and Workshop event on Policies for Educational Data Mining and Learning Analytics, held in Brussels. The event was followed by 67 people, including representatives from different institutions/organisations with different interests, skills and backgrounds. A successful special session on “Advances in Learning Analytics and Educational Data Mining” was held at ESANN 2015 conference on 23rd of April. The special session was organized by SmartLab, University of Genoa and Eindhoven University of Technology, and 50 to 60 people attended. The speakers presented very interesting cases of LA and EDM in workplace, higher education and schools. The LACE Evidence Hub brings together evidence about learning analytics from all around the world and relates it to four propositions Learning analytics improve learning outcomes Learning analytics improve learning support and teaching, including retention, completion and progression. Learning analytics are taken up and used widely, including deployment at scale. Learning analytics are used in an ethical way. At the recent LAK15 conference, the high demand to have an overview of available datasets for Learning Analytics research has become evident. Based on the discussions at LAk15, we created a Call for Dataset descriptions together with the Journal for Learning Analytics (JLA), which will be published in a Special Issue. We aim with this initiative to get a better overview of potential datasets in the community, facilitate cooperation among LA researchers on specific data, and contribute to the quality benchmarking and a standardisation process for the evaluation of LA tools. LACE is pleased to announce that it will be organising a one day summit event to broker collaboration around the idea of an Open Learning Analytics platform – based on principles of modularity, open architectures, and open standards – in Amsterdam on December 1st 2014, collaborating with colleagues from the University of Amsterdam and the Apereo Learning Analytics Initiative. A post conference Workshop was organised by Lace together with Gala and Manuskills EU projects for the World Manufacturing Forum 2014 held at the marvellous Palazzo Mezzanotte, the headquarters of the Italian stock exchange, in central Milan in July 2014.
